![]() ![]() If the LA-2A had started as a software plug-in instead of a piece of hardware it probably wouldn’t be very widely acclaimed… however because people had to choose what track to put it on when they got one for their studio they had to choose the best track. I believe it’s the limiting factor of hardware that brings out the most creativity. You buy a plug-in and you can easily overuse it by throwing it on everything just because you think it sounds good. You buy one piece of outboard gear and you have to carefully choose where to put it. The plug-ins may clip at 0dB or 6dB whereas the hardware won’t “clip” it will just distort/sizzle at higher inputs…ĭiff #2: when you work with hardware you are limited on what you can use it on. The hardware has a ton more headroom than the digital plugins. The “Neve” sound of the 1073 IMO comes from the color added when you drive the input hot. headroom: when you drive an analog signal hot… that is usually where the magic happens with EQs, preamps, compressors etc. Honestly some of this analog gear you can get “close” but it can’t accurately be recreated with software. This adds a little subtle variation between channels, and you can randomize the channels as you’d like. However, this is legally distinct, at least as far as I can tell. NEED73 has a similar feature to the PA channel strips and its patented TMT mode. The controls are topped off with M/S mode, a view toggle for the VU meters, and the analog switch. You can also mute these individually to see how they affect the signal. These faders control the left/right or mid/side stereo signals. You have a pair of faders to the immediate right below a set of VU meters. The filters sound grand, and I love using them to shape electric bass and vocal signals. The low shelf goes from 35 to 220Hz, and the high shelf has a fixed value. ![]() There is a simple EQ section with a pair of shelves and a pair of filters. It is stepped, so you don’t have a ton of options, but it works well enough. You can leave it off or sweep out frequencies up to 300Hz. There’s a simple high-pass filter below the preamp section. The saturation is sweet and can quickly get into clipping when pushed. The preamp section is first up, offering a gain pad of -20 dB, drive, phase flipping, and a simple on/off switch. NEED73’s interface is divided into several sections, each with its specific function. ![]()
